Even the most talented lash artists can develop habits that hold them back from perfect, long-lasting results. Whether you’re a beginner still finding your rhythm or a seasoned pro ready to refine your craft, identifying and correcting these common mistakes can instantly elevate your work — and your client retention.
Here are the top lash mistakes we see in the industry right now — and exactly how to fix them.
1. POOR LASH CLEANSING OR PREP
The Mistake: Skipping or rushing the lash cleanse before application.
Why It Matters: Natural oils, makeup residue, and skincare can all compromise retention and cause premature shedding.
The Fix: Use a professional foaming lash cleanser and rinse thoroughly before applying primer. Educate your clients on pre-appointment prep (no oils, serums, or mascara for 24 hours prior!). A clean canvas = better bond.
2. INCORRECT HUMIDITY & TEMPERATURE CONTROL
The Mistake: Ignoring your lash room environment.
Why It Matters: Adhesive behaviour is directly tied to humidity and temperature — too dry and it cures too slowly; too humid and it shock-cures instantly, causing brittle bonds.
The Fix: Invest in a digital hygrometer and a mini humidifier or dehumidifier. Match your adhesive’s ideal range (usually 40–60% humidity) and replace your lash glue every 4–6 weeks.
3. LASH DIRECTION & LAYER CONTROL
The Mistake: Lashes that cross over, lean sideways, or stick together.
Why It Matters: This instantly ruins the lash line’s symmetry and can lead to stickies or discomfort.
The Fix: Work layer by layer, checking alignment as you go. Use isolation tweezers to ensure every lash is perfectly separated. Mastering directional flow is what separates “good” from great artistry.
4. OVERUSING ADHESIVE
The Mistake: Using a big glue bead or re-dipping too often.
Why It Matters: Excess glue creates heavy, clumpy bases that look messy and can cause lashes to pop off.
The Fix: Less is more! Aim for a tiny adhesive bead that wraps around the natural lash — not a blob. If you’re noticing glue build-up, slow down your dip speed or replace your glue drop more frequently.
5. IGNORING LASH HEALTH & AFTERCARE
The Mistake: Prioritising fullness over health.
Why It Matters: Damaged natural lashes = shorter retention and unhappy clients.
The Fix: Choose appropriate lash lengths and diameters for each client’s natural lash strength. Incorporate lash serums, Elleeplex treatments, or nourishing products into your aftercare recommendations. A healthy lash line = loyal clients.
